Corner Office, please.

I thought he was crazy.
Turns out he was wise.

Steve took Carter to work today.  Yes, folks, Carter commuted with Steve downtown Chicago on the train, for an 11 1/2 hour day.  And this just in:  He LOVED it!

The train ride: reportedly his favorite part.
That's right, folks; we brown-bag it.
Some light reading to help with his dissertation.
Talking to Mom...or was this him closing the deal?
A trip to the Disney Store never hurt anyone during lunch break.
And a little sight-seeing did, in fact, involve Ghiradeli's chocolate outside the Water Tower.
Horses downtown always deserve a picture...
...especially THIS MUCH horse power (Lamborghini).

After a big day at the office, this 5 year old didn't think he was tired, but was asleep in his bed within minutes.

Dear Santa, thanks for the presents.

Carter got his FAVORITE present from Santa this year.  It was amazing.  He was so excited.  And the toy was super cool.  A remote control helicopter.  Unfortunately, it broke so we had to send it back.  To Santa of course.  So after wrapping it up and putting the shipping label on ("Santa told us where to ship it"), he asked if he could please write a note on the box.  Sure, here's a pen...
"Dear Santa, My helicopter is broken, so I sent it back. Love, Carter"
"Still, Thanks for my present."

Something about this whole thing makes my heart tender.  What a sweetie!

Christmas--the sequel

Yes, that's right.  As of 10 o'clock last night, this is still what our tree looked like :
Yes, we opened presents yesterday.
All day...
with playing with the toys, church, and a dinner and party with our grandparents in between.
So, this morning we pick up where we left off
...with egg nog and everything.
Check in tomorrow...hopefully this won't turn into 'Christmas--the trilogy'.

Merry Christmas!

What We Love About the Holidays
STEVE:  The Music.  Steve plays the part of Christmas DJ in our home...and car...and calendar!  He keeps the carols piping through the stereo, sings in the shower, and finds tickets for the greatest Christmas concerts around!
KERRI: The Kindness.  Strangers are smiling and holding doors for each other.  When out with the kids, she’s hearing a lot less “You’ve Got Your Hands Full” and a lot more, “Let Me Get That for You”!  This is the time for random acts of kindness!
CARTER (5):  The Cookies. Carter has helped make and deliver several plates of goodies this season, mostly for those who do service for us – teachers, the parking lot helpers at school, our postman, the librarian, and the fire department!
ADDISON (Almost 4):  The Lights.  “Especially the rainbow ones that twinkle”.  Whenever we are in the car, Addison is our decoration tour guide, making sure we don’t miss a single house!  “WOW!  Look!  Did you see that?”...ahh, the magic.
ALANA (2):  Baby Jesus.  She finds every nativity around --.in someone’s yard, house, or store—and excitedly announces in her biggest voice that she found Baby Jesus!  She’s always reminding us of the reason for the season.
Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays,
and make your New Year even better than the last.

"I'll be Home For Christmas"

How would you respond if last week your husband sends you a text that says
"I have to go to Jamaica on Monday, and will be home right before Christmas."

.....uhhhhhh.....

Well, turns out his business trip was good timing anyways.  The kids and I have finished up all the Christmas plans and some extras we hadn't done yet.  Yes, I confess that means
  • Lots of errands.
  • Some small crafts thrown in the midst to make me feel better about myself as a mom.
  • Some homemade projects under the tree to feel more traditional.
  • Some cookie plates whose only evidence left are the crumbs and cards.
  • And my sister in town, so we've been entertained by her family and the grandparents for the last half of the week!

But how would you respond when all your hopes and dreams for a white Christmas are being dashed by the weather man...and seconded by views like this that your husband sends you from his resort condo:
Yep, looks like all of the Chicagoland area ... and Jamaica ... will only be
"Dreaming of a White Christmas."

But at least it won't be blue.
Steve made it home just fine.

Her favorite color's purple-one.

I LOVE my little girl.
And she LOVES purple.

She loves it so much that she is always asking for claiming the purple one of anything.  Markers, Bowls, Construction paper...you name it, "I want the purple one!"  Yet I've come to believe that it's not that she wants the "purple one", but it's that she sincerely believes that the word for purple really is "purple one."  Because what comes out is,
"I want the purple-one dress."
"Where's my purple-one pillow?"
"See? My purple-one picture?!"

And I just smile and say, "Yes, I love your purple-one picture."

Best White Elephant Gift I've seen this year...

Yes, that's right...a LIVE LOBSTER was the most surprising white elephant gift last night...Glad I wasn't the one that reached into THAT gift!!  What was the best white elephant you've seen?

The girls know what's up...

The boys are all still asleep, and Alana and I just helped ourselves to a pre-breakfast brownie.
Ahh...I love a girl after my own heart!

Setting the Record Straight...

It was a lovely Sunday evening.  All had gone well during the day.  Everyone was kind and peaceful.  The lasagna was hot and ready to be eaten.  "Amen" was said by all, and as soon as we were offering food to our 3 dinner guests, one of our boys decides to announce that "There's a Baby in Mommy's Tummy!"

{Insert sound of car screeching to a halt here}.

Between you and me, it's not true.  No, I'm not pregnant, but it sure does confirm the "Kids Say the Darndest Things" adage.  Where did he come up with that?  Maybe it's that we've been around enough beautiful newborns lately to make Anne Geddes jealous.  Maybe it's because a friend in his class is soon to have a baby brother.  And who else did he tell besides our dinner party?  Apparently his kindergarten class.  oh lovely.  And another family apparently thinks we are moving to Florida...

...any other family news I should know about?

I admit it...

I admit it...I, and about a bizzillion fifty-year-old ladies, went to go see the Donny and Marie Christmas Concert downtown Chicago.  It was opening night, and we got free orchestra seat tickets...and, well, what would you say?  No, to a perfectly good reason to go on a festive date with your husband?

Well, let's just say I had to delicately approach the subject with Steve.  Somehow, "Hey, do you want to go to a Donny and Marie Osmond concert" wasn't going to catch his attention as much as, "Guess what I got?  Free tickets, this Tuesday, Orchestra seating, Oriental Theater, Christmas concert. -- oh yeah Donny and Marie."

Of course we laugh and giggle, kind of embarrassed that we are about to join the throngs of older ladies who yes, were kissing anything Donny related in sight -- the posters, the marquee, the live cutouts in the lobby...and let's not mention the lady that grabbed him and pulled him into her aisle while he was singing amidst the audience!

But putting the generation gap aside, it was actually a really really fun concert and YES, totally confirmed the Christmas Spirit!!  And, as Donny was my neighbor for 6 years, Steve didn't mind waiting after the show to say hello.  Glad we've still got it.  It was fun to see him -- and the show.

I change my answer.....

The other night we were playing The Newly Wed Game.  Steve asked me this question:

"If you had $1000 to spend on something for the home, what would it be?"

I said a TV, because that's what I thought he'd say (see the strategy)?

He said a computer, because that's what we really need (hence the lack of blogging).

But last night, when a door-to-door salesman came to our home, we realized we were both wrong.

What our lives are really lacking is a Kirby Vacuum cleaner.

For $0, the guy came in our home, and cleaned and shampooed our downstairs carpets, our sofa, chairs, and pillows (yes, the ones we sleep on to show us all the nasty stuff in them).  WOW.  You think your vacuum is working til you see what it leaves behind.  Amazing stuff.

So, if I had $1000 to spend on something for the home, what would it be?  A Kirby Vacuum Cleaner.  Now where to find the other $800....

Things that make you go "aww"

Tonight Addison said,
"Wow.  The moon is so pretty-ful!"
Aww.
And in all actuality, it was.

life's mystery

Can someone explain why so many little kids sleep upside down?

All my kids do it, until it seems, they are about 4 and decide to do the whole pillow-head orientation thing...I mean, really, I know it's so common, but why do so many kids do it?  It seems like this innate rebellion against the right way to do things...

Or maybe we are all supposed to sleep upside down.  After all, if that's what they do naturally...

Similar to the shoe-on-the-wrong-foot phenomenon.   No matter how hard kids try to remember which shoe goes on which foot, they ALWAYS get it wrong.  Until they learn differently, it seems the left shoe ALWAYS makes it on the right foot, and the right shoe ALWAYS makes it on the left foot, until a smiling child comes rushing up and asks, "Did I get it right?"  And we wisely remind them that no, they got it backwards....again.

But what about those times when we hug our little ones and just congratulate them on a job well done, and let them wear their shoes that way for a day.  Or let them sleep on their beds all lopsided and upside down.  Are we doing them a disservice?  No.  We are letting them be kids.  And we are taking a moment to live that moment with them.

God bless these moments.

And help us take time to let our kids be kids before teaching them OUR ways too fast.

Curious...

Why don't
Daughter
and
Laughter
rhyme?

Anyone?

Of course, it's just one of those things we memorize as time goes on, like the difference between through, dough, and tough.  But when a kid is learning to read, or someone's learning english as a second language, I mean, come on.  Can we make things any harder?

If only I could use that as an excuse for my blunder the other day.  I was looking at vinyl signs...you know, the deocrative ones that hang on walls and look so pretty you don't even have to read them.  Well, this one was a definition of 'daugther'.  And how 'daughter' is filled with love and warmth and trust...

though my mind was saying 'Dafter'...what's 'dafter'?

oooohhhh.

Decribination: (noun) the process of removing ones crib

Today's the day
I took the crib down.

Tomorrow's the day
I'll regret it.
After over almost 6 years it's been set up in that room.  It was Steve's sisters' crib, and Carter's, Addison's, and Alana's.  It's been through jungle themes to butterflies.  It's been p**ped on and spit up in.  It was a bed for sleeping angels as well as a cage for wild animals.  But for the last few weeks it was best used as a trampoline.
Survey says: time to take it down.

With the excitement of Alana's big girl bed, {a queen bed for a 2 year old, really?} and now the empty space where the crib had been, I feel like I finally have a little girl's room!  She is so happy with the new set up, her books, her chair, her dolls and play things.

But taking the crib down, I also felt a little nervous, like it was a big deal.  I took the crib down.  I took the crib down.  For the first time in my life, I took a crib down.  Like it's a statement.  And it is.  For the first time EVER I haven't NEEDED to get a kid out of the crib so a new baby could have a turn.  True, I had a thought to just leave it up in the meantime, but then I realized how good it would feel to have that empty clean space for 9 months or 2 years or whenever our next baby would come.

So in the mean time, we have a garage with a crib, a little girl's bedroom, and extra vacuum lines to show for it.

"And the tree was happy."

Fun art project for kids!

Lucky me...I taught preschool TWICE in October, so could really amp it up with the Halloween theme!  So last week's lesson -- G for Ghosts -- was SO FUN!

I wish I had shared this with you earlier to do the art project at home, but sometimes the best laid plans...

Our preschoolers LOVED this art project -- they worked on it for quite a while and were so focused!  Before the kids arrived, I drew ghosts with a white crayon on white paper.  I pressed pretty hard with the crayon.

Then they used water colors to paint the whole paper -- they were on a ghost hunt!  When their water color found the crayon, the wax repelled the colors, so the ghosts appeared!  It was amazing!  And so fun!  They loved the art, then experimented in science by making their own pictures with crayons and coloring over them.  See how even the yellow pops out when colored over with blue at the bottom of the page?
The ghost hunt doesn't really apply for your art projects anymore, but try hiding their names or other designs on the paper!  Have fun!

Of course we did more than this for our ghost theme!  My other favorite thing we did was discovering our OWN ghosts that follow us all the time, i.e. our shadows!  We went outside and tried to trick our ghosts, doing something that our shadow ghost wouldn't know how to do.  Didn't work.  The shadow races were so fun, too.  The shadows always won win running to THAT fence, but when we turned around and ran the other way, the kids always won!
I tell ya, teaching preschool with these kids really unlocks something for me.
I'm loving it!

Trick or Treating for Books!

Our church is participating in a book drive through November.  After going through all our books, we found 2.  Boring.  (we'd just done a Good Will drop off...so much for timing!)

But then I had that inkling.
"But You Can Do More."
And I knew that I could.

So Carter and I made up a flyer, went to Dominicks to get paper bags, and then we went throughout our neighborhood delivering the bags and flyers for donations.  We'd be back this Saturday.
They had a system!  Carter put the bag down, and Addison put the rocks on top to keep it from blowing away!
Today was pick up day!  We woke up so excited, it was hard to even get breakfast in before pick-up time!

We just came home from our first pick up, and we got 108 books!!!!  And that's just SO FAR!

All the books are going to Bernies Book Bank, who will deliver the books to at-need families for the holidays!  I can't tell you how AWESOME it is getting my kids involved in this service project, and reaching out to my neighbors as well!

Our recent Halloween Goodies

At Janet's recipe request:
Candy Corn Popcorn Balls
Sweet and Gooey, Not to Sweet, and amazingly festive.
Ingredients:
1/2 stick of butter
4 cups mini marshmallows, or 40 big ones
12 cups popped popcorn (which is about 1/2 cup kernels)
1 tsp vanilla extract
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 cups Candy Corn
Directions:
1. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil and spray with nonstick cooking spray.
2. Place the popped popcorn and the candy corn in a large mixing bowl and set aside -- and I don't mean big, I mean large.  Like, my stock pot was perfect.

3. Melt the butter in the microwave for 30 seconds. Add the marshmallows, and microwave for an additional 90 seconds to melt them. The marshmallows might not look melted at the end of this time, but once you stir them, they should liquefy. Stir to blend the butter and marshmallows, then add the vanilla and salt and stir until smooth.
4. Pour the marshmallow mixture over the popcorn and candy corn, and stir until they are thoroughly combined. Allow the mixture to sit for a minute, to cool down the hot marshmallow.
5. Spray your hands with nonstick cooking spray, and scoop up a handful of popcorn. Press it firmly between your hands, forming a ball shape. Make sure that the balls are compact; loosely formed popcorn balls easily fall apart. If the balls don’t form at first, allow the mixture to sit for another minute, this seems to help them hold together.
6. Place the popcorn balls on the prepared baking sheet and allow them to firm up at room temperature. Store the popcorn balls in an airtight container in a cool, dry room.
And at Keli's request:
Orange Spider Cupcakes
Freakish Looking, but Freakishly Delicious!

To Make Cupcakes:
1 yellow cake mix
1 3 oz orange jello mix
3/4 C water
3/4 C oil
4 eggs
2 scoops sour cream (about 1/3 cup)
Mix and beat all together for 4 minutes.  Then pour into prepared cupcake tins and cook for 20 minutes at 350.
For Frosting:
Make a buttercream frosting, using orange extract for flavor and orange food coloring for the decor (17 yellow drops to 5 red ones).  I doubled my frosting recipe to have plenty of frosting to decorate all 24 cupcakes, and I used 1/2 tsp orange extract and 1 tsp vanilla.  Yes, the orange flavor was perfect.  If you need a great frosting recipe, see this post and scroll to the end.
The Spider Webs:
Buy Betty Crocker's Black Gel (1 tube does 5 cupcakes).  Make 4 cocentric circles on top , then pull a toothpick from the center of the cupcake to the edge, all the way around the cupcake to make the web.
For the Spiders:  (beware, after putting these on, you may be too freaked to eat the cupcakes, so leave some spider-free for folks like me!  The spiders looked TOO real for comfort!)

Ok, you need Black or Purple Spice Drops, with the sugar on them.  First, roll one drop in your hands to make soften it.  Next, cut it in half, and stick the top round part in the middle of the web.  Behold, the body.  Then, slice the remainder of the spice drop into slices, and in half again, to make the legs.
And on tomorrow's menu:
Ghost Banana Pops
1. Place a popsicle stick through the half of a ripe banana, then cover with plastic wrap and freeze until firm (3 hours)
2. Melt some white chocolate in the microwave.
3.  With a butter knife, spread the white chocolate over banana halves (after you've removed the plastic, of course!)  Place on a dish covered in wax paper so you can get them off easily.
4.  Decorate with mini chocolate chips for the eyes and an upside down regular sized chip for the mouth and pop in freezer to set again until ready to serve.
Or, for an easier I-Want-It-NOW version, omit the frozen pop part, and just stick the eyes and mouth into a fresh banana half and serve!

And what's cuter to serve those with than these:
Chocolate Covered Strawberry Ghosts
Dip strawberries in melted white chocolate (8 ounces baking chocolate, with 1 tsp butter and 1/8 tsp almond extract).  Decorate with mini chocolate chips for eyes, then melt some chocolate and use a toothpick to draw the mouth.

Halloween Safety FHE

In case you were looking for a Halloween idea for Family Home Evening tonight, consider using this story that teaches Halloween Safety Tips.  While Sugardoodle.com has an original version of it, I changed it up (a lot) to something I liked a lot better.

I posted the whole story on FiveRealMoms.com.  Click here to go directly to that post.  It's a cute story about 6 Halloween Ghosts that practice their safety rules:

Rule #1 Go with a friend,
Someone who stays with you until the very end.

Rule #2 Never talk to a stranger;
You’ll never know where there is danger.

Rule #3 When you go trick or treating, watch the traffic.
With this rule I can’t be more graphic.

Rule #4 Go trick or treating like a pro,
Only go to the houses of people you know.

Rule #5 Remember your manners, say thank you and please.
This will put your neighbors at ease.

Rule #6 Is a rule that can’t be beat.
Look at your treats before you eat.

This makes a fun FHE lesson, or you can incorporate it into your preschool or Homeschool lesson.  Thursday we're doing this in our preschool.  And after teaching about these kinds of ghosts, I'm going to show them their very own ghosts that follow them around all the time: THEIR SHADOWS!

Through the Eyes of a Child

So some kid finger paints in his garage, and they hang it in a museum and call it a master piece.

I'm not saying it's equivalent, but as Carter rode home on the school bus from a Chicago field trip, these were some of the shots he took with my camera,  Keep in mind, the bus was moving, and they're through the window pane.

We can not discover the talents within our children until we give them the tools to unlock their potential.
--Me.  I said that myself.  But I wanted to sound wise.  What do you think?

Another fun day at the beach house

...Or so I call it...We try to make it to the Lake Michigan shore whenever I go home to Mom and Dad's.
The water was forty WHAT degrees?
And the sand didn't offer much more warmth...
But looking at their faces...do you think they mind?
Finding Seaglass with their cousins

A 2 yr old leads a 4 yr old through the playground, while a 3 yr old watches on with a careful eye.
Remember when all 5 of us sisters were pregnant at the same time, due one month after the other.  This is Jordan and Addison, part of that era, 4 months apart! Getting along perfectly, just as we planned!

Oh Great...

We've been semi-out-of-town since Thursday.  Semi-out-of-town, because we've been up at my parents house while my sister and her family have been visiting.  SO FUN!  We've been driving back home for only important things like school, birthday parties, and church meetings.  Obviously not long enough to even open our fridge.

Would have been helpful.  Because today, as I came home from our fun semi-trip, I found our freezer and fridge are broken.  Everything's melted.  Oh so sad.

Oh yes, and we also discovered that while we were gone the wind completely broke the glass of our storm door off.  Broke the chain and everything.  And I now have to repaint my front door because that whole scenario somehow scratched the paint.  And our neighbors rounded up our garbage can and recycling bins that had blown throughout the neighborhood.  Nice neighbors.  What a weekend to be gone!
